Learn about Chino, CA

Located in the southwestern tip of San Bernardino County in the state of California, the city of Chino is known for being an agricultural and dairy farming hub in the state.

Chino's first modern inhabitants were the Tongva Native American people, who lived in the area even before the Spanish missions of the 1700s began. In 1841, Mexican Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado of Alta California granted the 22,193-acre Rancho Santa Ana del Chino to Antonio Maria Lugo of the influential Lugo family. In 1871, the rancho's new owner, Richard Gird, subdivided his holdings into smaller ranchos, and the town of Chino was founded. The community was formally incorporated in 1910.

In the 1960s, the city became a popular shooting site for Hollywood films, while much of the suburban development began a decade later in the 1970s. Today, Chino is home to more than 81,000 people.
